VALED for Principals and Assistant Principals

Driving School Success Through Principal Leadership: The VALED Framework

VALED uses three assessments to capture a 360° view of principal effectiveness at the school level - a teacher survey, a supervisor survey, and a principal self-assessment survey.

Majority of items are adapted from a previously validated instrument developed by Vanderbilt University and Mathematica under the Principal Supervisor Initiative through the Wallace Foundation.

  • A 360-degree feedback tool

  • Developed with Baltimore City Public Schools

A validated instrument:

  • Interviews and focus groups with all involved stakeholders

  • Pilot administration and analysis of items

Each comprehensive evaluation requires respondents to rate the principal on 72 items and identify evidence justifying their assessment of principal leadership behaviors across to two dimensions.

Core Components of School Performance: These components represent the foundational elements of a successful school environment:

  • High Standards for Student Learning

  • Rigorous Curriculum

  • Quality Instruction

  • Culture of Learning & Professional Behavior

  • Connections to External Communities

  • Performance Accountability

Key Processes of Leadership: These processes describe how effective principals establish and maintain the core components within their schools:

  • Planning

  • Implementing

  • Supporting

  • Advocating

  • Communicating

  • Monitoring

By assessing both the what (Core Components) and the how (Key Processes) of effective leadership, VALED provides a holistic and actionable view of principal performance. This data-driven approach informs targeted professional development, supports continuous improvement, and ultimately contributes to student success.

REPORTING & DATA EXTRACTS

The Vanderbilt Assessment of Leadership in Education (VALED) is conceptually and theoretically grounded, and its resulting scores are reliable and valid for purposes of evaluating learning-centered leadership. The VAL-ED uses 360 degree feedback from teachers, principals, and supervisors. The content focuses on learning centered leadership behaviors that influence teachers and staff, and in turn are related to increases in student achievement. The VALED assesses leadership behaviors, not knowledge, dispositions, or personal characteristics of leadership. The survey requires respondents to identify evidence on which they are basing their assessment of principal behaviors. The psychometric properties of the VAL-ED are clearly documented and showcased in Resonant Education’s comprehensive reports.
